SUMMARY:Sewing Medieval Braises+Chausses / Hosen
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \n\n\n\nThis workshop focuses on medieval underwear and stockings of 14th-century England commonly used by men and women. For men\, braies are under pants and chausses are footed stockings\, both of which are fastened to a cloth waistband. Women’s stockings are called hosen and are footed and worn just below the knee\, held by garters. \n\n\n\nWe will explore their construction\, the type of fabric used\, and we will draft patterns which we will then use to sew these items for ourselves. \n\n\n\nThe fabric requirement is wool flannel or linen\, 60” wide. You will need to source your own fabric for this project in a solid color of your choice\, keeping in mind the medieval colors available at this place and time. In many medieval illustrations\, women often have red hosen. Garters are often made of leather\, twill tape or tablet woven lengths. Braies are usually made from white linen. Think of chausses as medieval tights\, which are therefore made of wool\, as wool is much more elastic than Linen. Please\, no patterns or plaids. To assist you\, once you register\, you will be send a list of online resources where you might purchase linen and wool fabric. Please be aware of ordering and shipping time frames\, so that your fabric arrives in time for this workshop.  \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide needles and thread for handsewing and modern sewing machines for sewing seams\, whichever you chose\, or a combination for that finished medieval look. You are welcome to bring any sewing notions\, such as matching thread and decorative bands or buttons\, if you wish. \n\n\n\nThe pattern will be drawn onto packing paper using measurements you will take and fill in the blanks on a sketched chart\, then the fabric is cut according to that pattern\, so you may start assembling. Guidance will be given freely for the assembly process and you may choose to sew by hand or with a sewing machine\, or both. Please know that the construction assembly can be rather fiddly\, so bring your great attitude and patience. But\, no fear\, we can guide you so that your project will be something of pride. \n\n\n\nReference and resource handouts will be made available for each participant that they can take home and keep. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will probably be 5 to 7 hrs in length\, and will be held in the Craftersʻ Hall at Camlann Medieval Village. It may take most of you more time in which to complete this project\, if you have not made such an item before\, or if your sewing skills are new and limited\, but there are opportunities for more help! We are planning to have Sew Meet Ups on Village Days\, May-September\, in Camlann Medieval Village where you can meet up and sew together\, if you need more time and assistance. Access to the Craftersʻ Hall may be limited during those meet ups\, but there are other locations on site where we can gather and sew together. Please know that during Village Days and Festival Days\, the meet ups will be ‘in character\,’ as the Village will be filled with museum visitors. \n\n\n\nBecause of the length of this workshop\, you are welcome to bring a personal lunch or snacks\, but please know that food consumption is not allowed in the Crafters’ Hall. Any food brought can be consumed outside in the Village Square or in the Bors Hede. \n\n\n\nNOTE: You will need to supply your own fabric.  \n\n\n\nMen: 1 ¼ yds 60” wide linen for braies (under wear)\, 2 ½ yds 60” wide wool flannel for chausses (hose). Add ½ yd if you are a size larger than M and add a ½ yd if you are taller than 6′. These are cut on the bias. \n\n\n\nWomen: Hosen (stockings) 2 yds 60” wide wool flannel. Note: if you are taller than 5ʻ4”\, you will need 2 ½ yards 60” wide wool flannel. These are cut on the bias. \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.

SUMMARY:Sewing a Medieval Tunic / Kirtle
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, each participant will ultimately construct either a fourteenth-century tunic or kirtle for themselves. We will begin by drafting out a pattern for a man’s tunic or a woman’s kirtle/cote\, applying the documented medieval philosophy of using only squares\, triangles\, and rectangles for the pattern pieces to conserve time-intensive woven cloth. This construction style produces little-to-no fabric waste and garments that are well constructed with a comfortable fit. NOTE: You will need to supply your own fabric. See the bottom of the description for details. \n\n\n\nWe will utilize some modern sewing machine stitching and finish with hand sewing using stitches from the fourteenth century. This will give your garment an outside appearance of having being entirely hand sewn. It is recommended that participants be familiar with using a sewing machine and hand stitching. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide needles and thread for handsewing and modern sewing machines for sewing seams. Necessary tools to complete all tasks EXCEPT FABRIC will be available for participants use. Worksheets and documents regarding construction techniques are provided along with the assistance and counsel of a seasoned seamstress. All documents will be included for each participant to take home with them for reference. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be limited to 6 participants\, and will be held in the Craftersʻ Hall at Camlann Medieval Village. Because of the workshop’s length\, you are welcome to bring a personal lunch or snacks. Any food brought can be consumed outside in the Village Square or in the restaurant. \n\n\n\nNOTE: You will need to supply your own fabric: \n\n\n\nFABRIC FOR MEN’S CLOTHING: 3 ½ yds 60” wide linen for shert (shirt) + 3 ½ yds 60” wide wool flannel for tunic (size M). Add ½ yd if you are a size larger than M or if you are over 6′. \n\n\n\nFABRIC FOR WOMEN’S CLOTHING: 4 yds 60” wide linen for chemise\, 4 yds 60” wide wool flannel for kirtle. Subtract ½ yd from each if you are smaller than 5’4″. For parti color (two colors)\, you will need 2 ¼ yds 60”wide of each color. For a surcote\, 3 yds 60” wide ; contact ‘Iwalani Christian upon registration for more details. \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.

SUMMARY:Sewing a Medieval Hood Workshop
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \n\n\n\nOur focus for this workshop will be the medieval hood. While archeological finds have brought several types and styles of hoods\, we will focus on what we know as a type and style of hood from 14th-century England commonly used by villagers\, merchants and clergy. \n\n\n\nWe will explore the construction of the hood\, applying the documented philosophy of using only squares\, triangles and rectangles for the pattern pieces to avoid fabric waste. \n\n\n\nThe fabric requirement is 1 yd of Wool Flannel 60” wide. You will need to provide your own fabric for this project. Please choose your own color\, and if you want your hood to be historical\, keep in mind the colors available in 14th-century England. Please\, no patterns or plaids. To assist you\, once you register\, you will receive a list of online resources where you can purchase wool fabric. Please be aware of ordering and shipping times to ensure that your fabric arrives in time for this workshop. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide needles and thread for handsewing\, as well as modern sewing machines for sewing seams. You may use which you chose\, including a combination\, to achieve that “medieval look.” You are welcome to bring any sewing notions\, like matching thread and decorative buttons\, if you wish. \n\n\n\nFirst we will drawn the pattern directly onto your fabric with tailors chalk (available at the Crafters Hall for your use)\, then cut it so you can start assembling. Guidance will be given freely for the assembly process\, and you may choose to sew by hand or with a sewing machine. Please know that the construction assembly requires insertion of 4 gores\, which are known to be rather fiddly\, so if you have not put a gore in before\, or if you did not attend the ʻHow To Sew Medievalʻ Workshop here at Camlann\, it may test your patience. But no fear\, we can guide you so that your project will be something of pride. \n\n\n\nReference and resource handouts will be made available for each participant via a USG thumb drive. One they can take home and keep. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be limited to 8 participants. The workshop will probably be 5 to 7 hrs in length each day for 2 days\, Saturday and Sunday\, and will be held in the Craftersʻ Hall at Camlann Medieval Village. It may take most of you both days in which to complete your hood. We also have Sewing Meetups on Village Days in Camlann Medieval Village where you can meet up and sew together. Access to the Craftersʻ Hall will be limited. \n\n\n\nBecause of the workshop’s length\, you are welcome to bring a personal lunch or snacks. Any food brought can be consumed outside in the Village Square or in the Bors Hede. \n\n\n\nParticipants to provide their own fabric: 1 yd 60” wide wool flannel. \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.

SUMMARY:Mid-Lenten Feast (Saturday)
DESCRIPTION:In medieval Europe\, Lent was observed as a period of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter\, during which meat and dairy products were not to be eaten. One meal\, in penance\, was to be eaten late in the afternoon. \n\n\n\nThe fourth Sunday in Lent\, known as Mid-Lent Sunday\, was sometimes treated as a feast to brighten lagging spirits. Skillful cooks found ways to follow the fasting rule without denying pleasure to the palate: yeast dough\, for example\, was substituted for pastry with egg binders\, and almond milk for meat stock in stews; food was fried in oil instead of in fat; and fish was substituted for flesh and fowl. Thusly were fine meat dishes transformed into delicious Lenten equivalents. In this spirit\, we have created for your enjoyment a feast of seafood\, vegetables\, and sweets\, with minstrels entertaining with live music and stories. \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

SUMMARY:How to Sew "Medieval"
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we will explore the construction of medieval clothing. Medieval clothing was constructed almost entirely of just squares\, triangles and rectangles\, as weaving cloth was a labor-intensive task and those shapes produced little-to-no fabric waste. And even from those shapes\, medieval garments were well constructed and had a comfortable fit. \n\n\n\nWe will try our hand at hand sewing 6 different stitches from the late medieval period and will produce a stitch sample you can take home for reference. We will also practice sewing using modern sewing machines and finishing with hand sewing in order to give our garments the appearance of having being entirely hand sewn. This approach gives better seam stability and shortens completion time without sacrificing a medieval exterior. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide needles and thread for hand sewing and modern sewing machines for sewing major seams. For a modest additional materials fee of $5\, ½ yard of cotton broadcloth fabric will be provided so participants can create their own stitch sampler and have a go at inserting a gore and gusset — the real challenge to medieval sewing. You are welcome to bring your own fabric if you wish\, just be sure it is of a natural fibre. i.e. cotton\, linen\, or wool. You may bring an embroidery hoop if you wish. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be held in the Craftersʻ Hall above the Weaver’s cottage at Camlann Medieval Village. You are welcome to bring a personal lunch or snacks. Any food brought can be consumed outside in the Village Square or in the Bors Hede. \n\n\n\nAdditional workshop materials will be sent to you after you register.  \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.
